Four Wells Walk 17/01/2004

Only 8 of us made this walk, all I can say is the rest of you stay at homes missed a great day. The walk started near Maen Llia in the Brecon Beacons, it was cold and misty but with tantalising hints of the scenery ahead showing as the mist occasionly parted. We began by walking north along the roman track Sarn Helen, a steady climb helping to warm us up. Then suddenly the mist parted to give us a great view of Fan Nedd and Ghirych with mist tendrils still filling the valleys below, a perfect picture oppurtunity.
We stopped for coffee at the entrance to the Nant Cwm Ddu Valley, it was here that the T.V. version of Lorna Doone was filmed a few years ago. Shortly after coffee we began the climb to Fan Frynach with mist and low cloud drifting around us but then parting to give clear blue skies and fantastic views of the main Beacon peaks and the valleys below.

Lunch was taken just at the edge of the dramatic Craig Cerrig-gleisssiad crags, these always draw my attention as I drive up the A470 towards Storey Arms. The highlight of the lunch break was seeing a young boy 10-12 yrs old jumping and playing in the remains of the snow as he walked passed us with is father.

After lunch we headed sw over Rhos Dringarth and the boggy Cefn Perfedd to reach firstly Rhos Dringarth, with fine views of Ysrafellte Reservoir and the Carmarthen Fans to the west. Finally we reached the summit of Fan Llia and had our last short break before heding west and steeply down hill back to our cars.

Our thanks to Bryan and Barbara for a fine walk.
